No remote required

This has got to become the new neatest thing. Not so much due to what it can do to a PC, though plenty will welcome an occasional reprieve from mouse-clutching.

It’s the expectation of the things to come that makes the gesture recognition so exhilarating. Just remember how many mins – nay, even hours – of your life have been wasted in tracking down the TV remote. Then imagine a TV set that you can control with a stylish wave of the hand.

In case anybody thinks that gesture recognition has anything to do with that now historic “lights off ( or on ) at the clap of the hands” trend, think again.

The clapping of the hands didn’t have anything to do with the gesture.

It had everything to do with the sound. The concept was to progress towards making PCs, TV sets and other appliances obediently reply to the voice of their master ( us ).

The advances made in the voice recognition technology have stayed modest. After fiddling with it for a while the researchers now say that voice recognition technology is too complicated. Against this, gesture recognition stands an improved chance.

Whatsoever did we do before you tube? The internet giant has taken on a life of its own and it transpires that the method is permeating other regions of media, marketing, publicity, news and entertainment in the form of video reviews.

For a start, reading had only been reachable to the majority of westerners for a hundred years or so, before that, only the most rich were fortunate enough to be able to afford to educate themselves or their children. Even in modern society, there are many people who are illiterate and therefore can’t get information that’s presented in written form.

Then there’s the issue that even if a person can read, the material might not be presented in a language that could be understood. Arguably, trying to glean information from a video review in a foreign language isn’t necessarily going to be successful or precise, but it’s amazing the amount of information that can be decoded through body language and tone of voice. All you require to do is recall the last time you viewed a subtitled movie, or absent mindedly viewed a commercial whilst abroad
